San Antonio Emerging as Texas’ Tech-Hub

01 May 2013   Posted by VND Direct  0 Comment

The more and more I connect with people throughout the city, the more and more I notice that San Antonio is growing in a huge way. Jobs here are always opening up and the sheer number of people migrating to the city is borderline overwhelming. The biggest shocker however, is the absolute need for technology in the businesses I meet, and how specialized said technology needs to be. So specialized, in fact, that many of the clients that approach us are approaching us to assist in their start-up’s development.

Of course Rackspace is here, and has been a staple for a few years. Some of their employees migrate from all over the country to come work for them and they are doing a lot to fuel the awareness of the tech revolution happening here throughout the community. But if you look around, you’re likely to notice that another big player in our city is the defense sector. And with that sector come more IT jobs as the security paradigm shifts from physical attacks to cyber attacks. In a recent bid the City of San Antonio just won, upwards of 8,000 jobs are being brought here and a lot of which are upwards of one hundred thousand dollars a year. Still no sign as to what the jobs will be, but one can only assume.

Even more central to our business, smaller web-design and IT solutions firms are popping up everywhere. In fact the number of start-up shops has nearly doubled since 2007. Maybe it has to do with the fact that students are graduating and having a hard time being placed right out of the gates. Maybe that fact is even a tell of how saturated the industry is with high quality developers and designers here. Either way this seems to be leading to these students creating opportunities for themselves by starting their own operations, in turn this is spurring up competition across San Antonio between the big and small players alike.

The next few years will get even more interesting as our governor campaigns for more and more business owners in other areas of the nation to bring their businesses to Texas. Businesses may become more niche and we may even see a completely different reincarnation of a Silicon Valley pop up in our own backyard. The fact remains that while San Antonio grows, the IT and web technology sectors grow along with it bringing more opportunity, more competition, and possibly most exciting of all – more innovation.
